5 Things to Do a Month Before You Move

Moving to a new house is no small task. There are a variety of things that you have to take care of and organize if you hope to get through the process with as little stress as possible. Moreover, the sooner you know where and when you will be moving, the sooner you can start making your plans and getting things in order.

While you might not know your closing date until a month or so out from your move, you shouldn’t wait until the week before that date to get organized. Rather, there are plenty of things you can do a month out from your projected moving date.

Here are just five of those things that you should do when you have a month to go before you move.

1. Compare Moving Companies

Even though you might not be prepared to officially hire your moving company at this point, it is important to start comparing local moving companies at least a month out from your move. By taking care of this early on, you can give yourself the best chances of finding the movers that will fit your budget and take the best care of your items as they transport them to your new home.

2. Take Inventory of Your Things

In order to move with as little stress as possible, it is a good idea to know exactly what it is that you are going to be moving. Your moving company will want to know a bit about this as well.

One month before you move, you should go through your house and make an inventory list of all the things that you will be bringing with you. This will also help you to make sure that everything arrived safely when you are unpacking in your new home.

3. Organize Your Important Documents

Aside from furniture and your personal belongings, you will also be moving your important documents to your new home. While you likely had a number of documents pulled out for the process of purchasing your new home, you will need to make sure that such things arrive safely at your new residence.

Depending on how many documents you have, it might be worthwhile to purchase some accordion folders so that you can get things organized. These will be easy to move and keep track of on moving day.

4. Get Packing

It might seem as though it is a bit early to start the packing process, but anyone who has moved before can tell you that there is no such thing as too early for packing. As soon as you know that you are definitely moving in a month or so, you should get things rolling by packing those items that you don’t need to have on hand.

5. Research Utility Companies

You will need to do a bit of research into which utility companies will be best for you in your new home. Make some calls and visit some review sites so that you can choose the right providers for electricity, internet, and the like so that you can be all set up for your first day in your new home.
