Driving in the 1900s Versus 2021s | Pitstop Arabia

Today, technology is evolving at such a rapid pace that people who don’t keep up risk of being left behind. Nowadays, up-grading yourself is compulsory, and the reason behind it is simple, technology is taking leaps forward. There are so many ways through which driving skills and advanced vehicles could help people.

It’s incredible to look back and compare how far car technology has come, from the Model T to the Mercedes-Benz. Today, young peoples are driving in a more complex traffic environment than ever before. Over the past century, millions of cars bought have created more congestion, road complexity, accidents, and dozens of driving problems.

The new technology in the 2020s already set to be a big decade in motoring. Many changes occur for 100 years. In this blog, PitStop Arabia is comparing these two decades to find how they differ. What kind of roads and cars were in the 1920s compared with today? What rules have been introduced as the car becomes faster with the passage of time?

Cars in the 1920s vs 2021

In the 19th century, the most significant innovation was Henry Ford’s Model T Ford that provided ease for people in traveling. But the 20th century brought many things with it, the most noticeable entity is the automobile. The automobile not only changes people’s lives, traveling from one place to another but also changed the streets themselves.

Since the 1920s, the pace of change in cars is incredible, going from being a rich man’s luxury to everyday goods. The engineering behind the cars like the Ford Model T was different from the cars of today. From that time, people operate the car with two gears, two clutches, a pedal for reverse, and a hand-controlled accelerator. Operating a 1920’s car now would be impossible for today’s drivers who are used to the standard three-pedal, one clutch, and five gears.

The things would become even more interesting when you consider that the next generation would use driverless cars.  If you told the motorist in the 1920s that one day they would drive a car that runs on electricity or a driverless car, they would probably laugh. But this is the reality in 2020, upcoming technologies in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have created electric vehicles that become a workable asset to everyday motorists.

The Complex Roadways Structure

Today, the USA is linked to thousands of miles of roads. New routes are being created every year that wasn’t this way in the early time period. If the drivers of the 1920s get a chance to drive today from any position A to B, it could be an adventure for them. Because, surely there were tracks connecting major towns and cities, but it was nothing more than dirt lanes built for horses and carriages. Also, in the early 20th century there were poor roads, and signposts, so getting lost in an unfamiliar road are obvious.

In the 20th century, the road has become a mixture of not only pedestrians, and carriages but also fast-moving automobiles. This caused traffic jams in cities like Dubai and Abu-Dhabi, UAE.
The speed at which technology is changing and making lives easier has created the main component of the car, tires. New tire brands are introduced like Bridgestone, Goodyear, Pirelli nowadays, which has great gripping on the wet surface and wouldn’t blow out on poor road conditions.

Repairing and Maintenance of The Car in 2021

Cars are now essential objects in our daily life. Whether we live in a small town or city, we can’t imagine our life without it. New cars are getting expensive day-by-day. So, old cars have to be last long, and in order to do that periodic maintenance of the car is required. Either you drive vehicles of big brands or economy brands, car repair and servicing are needed for all of them. Otherwise, your car might turn into a burden for you.

Repairing and Maintenance are performed when the vehicle is not functioning properly. After periodic maintenance, it would enhance the reliability, and performance of the car, and also save us from expensive repair costs. A well-maintained car is also beneficial for us because it can retain a higher resale value than a low-maintained car.

Rules of Car Driving In 1920 vs 2021

In the 1920s, the roads were a free-for-all. Back then, it was difficult to distinguish between bad driving and sensible driving. The Highway Code wasn’t released until 1931, so drivers had free rein over how they drove. Some rules did exist but they weren’t performed by people. Police had a difficult time enforcing rules on them before the official Highway Code was published.

With the passage of time roads becomes more dangerous. People quickly understand the fact that something needed to be done to keep pedestrians and drivers safe.  Since the 1920s, hundreds of rules have been introduced to make roads safer, and are constantly updating according to driving habits and new risks.

New advancements in technologies such as speed cameras and smartphones made it much easier for the police to enforce the rules of the Highway Code. Roads that were designed to increase the speed of vehicles are now used for many other purposes.

Final Thoughts

In the early era, without the foundation of traffic safety, you can imagine how dangerous driving was. Thousands of death and road accidents were reported because the basics of driving weren’t taught, and drivers have careless behaviors. After the 1920’s car manufacturers began to adopt safety features such as brake lights and standard headlights, tires, and other accessories. According to statistics, because of the new technologies, death rates are comparatively decreased than last UAE-WHO records.
